乘 (Cheng) is an exhibition about Thangka, spiritual practice and inheritance, presenting the joint exhibition of Zhangwa Chahetangchow and Zhangwa Damchemjeb, two Menthang tradition thangka artists from Mianjun Thangka Art Institute in Gannan. The title 乘 (Cheng) refers to the idea of carrying and arriving - a vehicle that carries one towards the other shore, and a metaphor for the faith, craft and time passed down through generations of thangka painting.

Within a limited exhibition space, we sought to create a journey that moves from looking to contemplation, and from the external image to an inward experience. Thangka is not simply an artwork to be viewed; it carries mineral pigments, earthly materials, religious iconography, ritual order and the lifelong discipline of the artist. Rather than placing the works within a neutral white-box setting, we used colour, light, textiles, objects and viewing scale to construct an immersive environment closer to the spiritual context of Thangka.

Terracotta-red walls, dark textiles, low-level lighting and focused illumination were used to echo the solemn, intricate and inward qualities of Thangka painting. The exhibition narrative extends beyond the display of finished works to reveal the process of practice behind them. Mineral pigments, painting tools, colour studies, sketches and related ritual objects were brought into the exhibition, allowing visitors to understand the time, training and belief embedded within each brushstroke.

For us, 乘 (Cheng) is not only the spatial presentation of a thangka exhibition, but also an attempt to respond to a traditional spiritual practice through contemporary exhibition design. Through the journey, we hoped to transform Thangka from a singular visual object into an experience that can be entered, sensed and lingered within - a quiet practice of cultivation made visible through the tip of the brush.
