A place of play, return, and the warmth of a thousand threads.

FIG.1Yilang showroom

Yilang Showroom + Office is a workplace and retail interior project for Yiwu Yilang Garments, a garment manufacturer specialising in scarves, gloves, hats, bags and knitted accessories. Situated within the context of Yiwu’s manufacturing and trade culture, the project reconsiders how a production-led company can present itself not only as a supplier of commodities, but as a brand with its own spatial world, material language and way of working.

FIG.2Plan

Our design sought to bring together two complementary conditions: the efficiency of an office and the softness of a showroom. Rather than treating display, administration and client reception as separate programmes, the design organises them as a continuous environment where products, people and workflows can overlap. The showroom becomes a place to encounter Yilang’s collections, while the office remains visually connected to the company’s everyday processes of design, merchandising, production coordination and e-commerce.

FIG.4"Ribbon"

The idea of the ribbon became a central spatial gesture. A fine, free-flowing metal line moves across the showroom area's ceiling, suggesting both a visitor route and the movement of thread through the space. It draws from the material world of Yilang’s products - yarn, fabric, stitching and softness - while also giving the showroom a sense of play and movement. Walls within the showroom are also treated as part of the exhibition experience, carrying brand narratives, product stories and moments of visual display rather than functioning simply as boundaries.

FIG.5Fluid openness in the showroom

The showroom is structured as a loose journey through a series of product rooms, including women’s, men’s, kids’, teens’ and baby collections. Each area is given its own atmosphere and display logic, allowing different product groups to be presented with a sense of character rather than through a uniform merchandising system. Hangers, shelves, tables and vitrines are used to accommodate garments, scarves, gloves, hats, bags and seasonal accessories, turning the showroom into a flexible product landscape.

FIG.9Loose furniture for flexible display

To support changing collections and seasonal updates, a series of movable display elements were designed using straw blocks and brushed stainless steel. These pieces can be rearranged for product launches, client visits, campaign displays and different merchandising scenarios. Their materiality introduces a contrast between softness and industry, warmth and precision, reflecting Yilang’s position between textile craft, manufacturing capacity and contemporary retail presentation.

The office area adopts a more open and adaptable organisation. Workstations are arranged within a generous field of OSB surfaces, exposed concrete structure and suspended industrial rails. Retractable ceiling sockets allow power to be adjusted according to changing desk layouts, giving the workspace a degree of long-term flexibility. The office design package shows this open working environment alongside entrance, pantry, meeting rooms, sunrooms and executive areas, creating a workplace that combines operational efficiency with moments of comfort and informal exchange.

Through the project, we sought to express Yilang’s identity as a brand rooted in textile production, material warmth and everyday collaboration. The design responds to the movement of threads, the flexibility of seasonal collections and the operational needs of a growing office. By connecting showroom, workspace and display into one continuous environment, we created a place where Yilang’s products, people and brand story could unfold together.
