The West Seoul Cultural Plaza is conceived as a clear and welcoming civic building where cultural and sporting programmes are brought together in a mutually enriching relationship.

By placing the library above partially sunken sports halls, each function lends character and energy to the other, creating a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. The library unfolds as a series of stepped levels, progressing from generous public reading spaces to the more intimate scale of the children’s library, with new views across the building and city revealed along the way. Integrated gardens and outdoor breakout spaces provide moments of respite and connection to nature.

The library becomes a ‘carpet’ laid out over the various sports volumes which are set partially into the ground. These large-span volumes, built with pre-cast concrete beams, support a timber glu-lam timber roof on a 9x9m grid. The lobby is an extension of the plaza — a welcome space where all users converge.
